West Orange, NJ – The RWJBarnabas Health Maternal Health Peer Recovery Program recently received recognition from the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) for its Outstanding Patient Experience during the 2025 Best at the Beach Awards. Key leaders from RWJBarnabas Health, including Suzanne Spernal, Connie Greene, and Alexis LaPietra, accepted this honor on behalf of the organization, highlighting its commitment to improving health outcomes in New Jersey.
Perinatal substance use disorder (SUD) is a crucial issue, and RWJBarnabas Health has been proactive in addressing it. The organization is leading the charge to reduce alarming rates of overdose deaths related to pregnancy in the state. By collaborating with the Institute for Prevention and Recovery, they developed a program focused on educating healthcare providers about managing substance use during pregnancy. This initiative aims to create a supportive environment that prioritizes the health of mothers and their babies.
The program features a dedicated team made up of obstetricians, addiction specialists, and peer recovery coaches—all of whom have experience in recovery themselves. These peer recovery specialists, trained as doulas, offer crucial support to expectant and new mothers. Their role ensures that patients have access to the care and resources necessary for a healthy pregnancy and successful recovery.
In 2024 alone, the program facilitated 1,736 follow-up visits for 82 patients and their babies, connecting them to vital services such as housing, food assistance, and education. To break down stigma and strengthen recovery efforts, RWJBarnabas Health hosted events like 51 All Recovery Meetings and 150 educational sessions statewide. These initiatives show how integrated care can significantly improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
Historically, addressing maternal health and substance use has been a challenge. Reports from the National Institute on Drug Abuse indicate that overdose deaths among pregnant women have been rising, stressing the importance of programs like this one. By focusing on both medical and social aspects of care, RWJBarnabas Health is paving the way for healthier futures and breaking cycles of addiction for generations to come.
RWJBarnabas Health is New Jersey’s largest health system, serving over five million people every year. Known for its commitment to high-quality, compassionate care, the system includes 14 hospitals and more than 9,000 affiliated doctors across 700 patient care locations. Their work extends beyond traditional healthcare; they partner with communities to address social issues such as food insecurity and homelessness.
