Warner Bros. is gearing up for a big Easter weekend at the box office with two exciting films: the popular A Minecraft Movie and the highly praised Sinners, featuring Michael B. Jordan.

The big question is: which film will take the lead? Warner Bros. is being cautious, projecting an opening of $35 million to $40 million for Sinners. The film is R-rated, and experts are mixed about its potential, with some tracking it to open at $40 million to $45 million. Meanwhile, other studios believe it could hit over $50 million.
A Minecraft Movie, produced in part by Legendary, should bring in around $40 million to $45 million in its third round. This film is on track to surpass $600 million globally, with $300 million from domestic audiences. It’s becoming one of the best video game adaptations ever and could be a much-needed win for Warner Bros.’ movie executives, particularly Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who have faced criticism for past failures.
Sinners is a significant project for De Luca and Abdy. It marks their commitment to backing high-profile directors and giving them the creative freedom they need. The film, with a budget of $90 million before marketing, is notably more expensive than Coogler and Jordan’s Creed, which had a $50 million budget.
Critics are giving Sinners high marks, with a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes—Coogler’s best yet. He first gained recognition with the indie hit Fruitvale Station and has since directed two Black Panther films.
Sinners is set in 1932 and stars Jordan as identical twins, Smoke and Stack. After surviving World War I and gangland life in Chicago, they return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta. With money in hand and a plan to open a juke joint, they face unexpected dark forces.
David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter praised the film, highlighting its deep themes and genre variety. He described it as a blend of Jim Crow-era struggles, vampire horror, and the power of the blues. Rooney noted that it masterfully combines elements of art house and grindhouse films, successfully engaging audiences with its tense direction and captivating visuals.
Sinners also features a talented cast, including Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku. The film will be released on April 18, following special Thursday previews.
This Easter weekend promises an exciting showdown at the box office, showcasing the creativity and talent in today’s film industry. As viewers anticipate these releases, it will be interesting to see how audiences react online—social media buzz often shapes the success of films in today’s market.
