Ryan Gosling had another hilarious night on Saturday Night Live, and once again, he couldn’t keep a straight face. Hosting for the fourth time, Gosling has earned a reputation for giggling through the sketches. His journey on the show began back in December 2015 with the funny “Close Encounters” sketch. That episode featured him and Kate McKinnon in a comical alien encounter, setting the stage for his future antics.
This time, the writers created a sketch called “Passing Notes,” designed to make him laugh. In this sketch, Gosling plays a principal addressing bullying in a classroom. He attempts to lecture Ms. Perry’s (Ashley Padilla) students about mean notes they’ve been passing around. As he speaks, the students keep interrupting by passing more notes, which quickly escalates into laughter.
A fun twist appeared on the screen warning, “The contents of these notes have been changed since rehearsal.” This had the crowd buzzing with excitement to see Padilla’s reactions. As she started reading the first note, a lighthearted jibe about her using ChatGPT for makeover tips, laughter erupted in the studio. Padilla struggled to maintain her composure, and Gosling, seated beside her, couldn’t help but chuckle.
Things got even funnier when Gosling read a note about their principal missing basketball shots—133 in a row! Each missed shot led to a hope that he would eventually make one, only to fail hilariously at celebrating his victory by trying to rip his T-shirt.
However, the sketch took a personal turn when they read a note about Gosling’s role in the recent Barbie film. In a playful moment, he read how the principal booked an entire row for himself at a movie showing. With a wink, he quoted his character’s charm, leading to an uproar of laughter onstage.
Gosling is aware of his habitual giggling. During a recent interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he mentioned how often he laughs on the show. He joked that he’s frequently told, “You laugh too much,” drawing parallels to Fallon himself.
SNL’s creator, Lorne Michaels, usually prefers that hosts stay in character and not break into laughter. But Gosling’s infectious giggles bring a unique joy that fans adore. The live audience certainly enjoyed every moment, watching both Gosling and Padilla struggling to keep it all together.
As we reflect on the evolution of comedy on shows like SNL, it’s clear that moments like these keep audiences coming back for more. Whether it’s an intentional sketch or just unscripted laughs, they encapsulate the charm of live television.
