Ryan Mountcastle Hits 10-Day IL: What Coby Mayo’s Recall Means for the Orioles

The Orioles made some roster changes recently, which included placing first baseman Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. They’ve called up top infield prospect Coby Mayo and outfielder Jordyn Adams from Triple-A Norfolk. To make room on the 40-man roster, catcher Chadwick Tromp was designated for assignment.

Mountcastle was in the spotlight after stealing home for the winning run in a game against the White Sox. Unfortunately, he had to leave the game due to hamstring discomfort. The severity of his injury is still unknown, and interim manager Tony Mansolino mentioned that Mountcastle would have an MRI.

Mountcastle is having a tough start to the 2025 season, hitting just .246 with a .280 on-base percentage through 200 plate appearances. This is a steep decline from his previous years, where he averaged a solid 112 wRC+. Historically, Mountcastle has relied on his power, but this year, his isolated power numbers have dropped significantly.

This injury might actually serve as a reset for Mountcastle. With him out, Mayo has a chance to showcase his skills. Despite struggling in past major league stints, Mayo has been a standout in the minors but has also seen a dip in performance there this season, hitting .226 with a .318 on-base percentage.

Mountcastle’s injury adds to a long list of Orioles on the injured list, which includes players like Jordan Westburg, Cedric Mullins, and Colton Cowser. The team has been struggling this season, posting a 20-36 record. As some players recover, Westburg and Cowser are both on rehab assignments and could return soon.

Jordyn Adams will help fill the gap left by Mullins, who also hit the injured list recently. Adams has a mixed history, hitting .212 in Triple-A this season, and has struggled in limited big league appearances previously. Yet, he brings versatility as he can play all three outfield positions.

Tromp’s situation is also notable. He was called up due to concerns about Adley Rutschman’s health but has now been designated for assignment since Rutschman only needed a couple of days off. Tromp has limited options and may look for an organization that offers him a better chance for playing time if he clears waivers.

Ultimately, the Orioles face numerous challenges with injuries. The team’s depth, once a strength, is being tested. How they navigate these changes could significantly impact their season moving forward.
