New Delhi: An Indian tanker, Jag Laadki, successfully left the UAE’s Fujairah after loading 80,800 tonnes of Murban crude oil. This comes despite a recent attack on the oil terminal. The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia to ensure fuel safety and stable supplies.
Jag Laadki is the fourth Indian-flagged vessel to navigate the region safely. It departed Fujairah at 10:30 AM IST and is now headed for India. The attack happened on March 14, 2026, while the tanker was loading. Thankfully, all crew members are safe.
This successful voyage is significant for Indian diplomacy, especially since the shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz have been under threat. These routes are vital for India’s energy security. Recently, two other Indian vessels, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, also completed their journeys through the perilous Strait, carrying 92,712 tonnes of LPG. Shivalik is set to arrive at Mundra port, Gujarat, on March 16, while Nanda Devi will be at Kandla port on March 17.
Before the ongoing conflict, a large portion of India’s energy imports came from West Asia. In fact, India relies on this region for about 88% of its crude oil and significant portions of its natural gas and LPG. Disruptions caused by recent events prompted India to look for alternative oil sources, including Russia. However, reliance on these alternatives has also affected LPG availability for local businesses like restaurants and hotels.
The Directorate General of Shipping has been actively monitoring the situation, receiving thousands of calls and emails from seafarers and their families seeking assistance. So far, they have helped repatriate 276 Indian seafarers and are in constant communication with shipping companies and maritime stakeholders to maintain safe operations.
Amid these challenges, the Ministry of Shipping continues to collaborate with other government bodies, ensuring the safety of Indian vessels and crews while striving to keep trade flowing. This relentless focus on safety and coordination showcases India’s commitment to maritime security during these turbulent times.
