Hollywood’s actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, has recently reacted to news that talent agents are considering representing an AI-generated character, Tilly Norwood.
In a statement, SAG-AFTRA emphasized its belief that creativity should always be grounded in human experience. They expressed strong opposition to replacing real actors with synthetic alternatives. The union clarified that Tilly Norwood isn’t a true actor but a creation of a computer program that learned from many professional performers—without their consent or compensation.
This move raises significant concerns. SAG-AFTRA pointed out that using AI characters could threaten jobs for human actors, undermine their artistry, and create ethical dilemmas regarding intellectual property. They reiterated that studios must adhere to their contracts when using AI performers.
At the recent Zurich Summit, actor and technologist Eline Van der Velden shared that she was negotiating with talent agents interested in signing Tilly Norwood. Following the announcement, a number of well-known actors, including Melissa Barrera and Whoopi Goldberg, voiced their concerns.
SAG-AFTRA has worked to protect actors’ rights against the misuse of AI, especially in light of the recent actors’ strike that emerged from disputes with major producers.
Van der Velden, who runs the AI production company Particle 6, recently launched Tilly Norwood on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. In response to the backlash, she described Tilly as a form of art, not a vehicle to replace human actors. She likened her AI work to animation and CGI, stating that it opens new storytelling avenues without diminishing the magic of live performance.
Expert opinions suggest that the rise of AI in entertainment may just be beginning. A recent survey found that 60% of creators believe AI can enhance their work rather than replace it. Still, the debate over ethics and creativity remains intense.
