Mumbai: A court in Mumbai has granted the police five days to hold Shariful Islam Shehzad, who has been arrested for breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan’s home. During the attempted burglary late Wednesday night, Shariful allegedly injured Khan and his staff.
Shariful, a Bangladeshi national, was found in Thane early this morning. Police reported that he entered India illegally and had been living in Mumbai for several months under a false name, Bijoy Das.
After his arrest, Shariful was quickly presented in court. The police told the judge they are looking into how he gained entry into India and who might have assisted him while he was here. They also want to connect with any of his acquaintances in the area.
The police are seeking to hold Shariful for 14 days, revealing that they only discovered his nationality post-arrest. In an alarming attack, Khan suffered six stab wounds, one of which was near his spine. The knife used broke into three pieces; one piece is still missing. However, one shard has been retrieved from Khan’s body.
Investigators suspect that Shariful disposed of the clothing he wore during the incident, which likely has bloodstains. They believe recovering these clothes is vital for matching blood samples.
The prosecutor pointed out that Shariful knew that Bandra, where Khan lives, is home to many celebrities and has tight security. Nonetheless, he managed to execute his plan to break in.
The lawyer representing Shariful claimed the accusations are unfounded, suggesting that because a celebrity is involved, the case has drawn heightened attention. Dinesh Prajapati, the lawyer, insisted that nothing incriminating has been found on his client and that no documents proving Shariful’s nationality have been presented.
