State-owned SAIL recently announced a significant achievement: it has provided around 8,000 tonnes of special-grade steel for two new Indian Navy frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri. These vessels were officially launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
This event marks a notable milestone. For the first time, two frontline frigates built at different shipyards were commissioned on the same day. This reflects a growing synergy in India’s naval capabilities.
SAIL has been a vital partner in supporting the defense sector. By supplying this steel, it not only aids in building advanced naval vessels but also helps India become more self-reliant. This effort ties in directly with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, aimed at reducing reliance on imported materials, especially for defense needs.
The steel for these new frigates was produced at SAIL plants in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela. The company has been instrumental in supplying steel for other notable naval projects, including INS Vikrant and INS Nilgiri.
Recent data indicates that India aims to increase its defense manufacturing capabilities. According to the Defence Ministry, the share of domestic procurement in defense has been steadily rising. This trend not only boosts local industries but also enhances national security.
As the Indian Navy evolves, the role of local suppliers like SAIL becomes increasingly important. They contribute not just materials but also expertise, fostering innovation within the industry.
