SALINE, MI – A familiar face in Saline education is making waves in the science community. Leigh Ann Roehm, a dedicated teacher at Saline Middle School for nearly 20 years, has been recognized as one of the top science teachers in the nation. She received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, announced by the White House on January 13, 2023.
Roehm’s journey to this honor started when she was nominated by Michael McVey, the Saline School Board President. She took on a detailed application process during the 2022-23 school year. Reflecting on her achievement, Roehm expressed that the award is a “humbling honor.” However, she believes the true reward lies in the support she receives from her students, colleagues, and the community.
In her own words, “The students, administrators, colleagues, mentors, and community members are what bring joy to my life.” She feels grateful to work in a district that values education and fosters a supportive environment for teachers and students alike.
Beyond the classroom, Roehm has chaired the science department at Saline Middle School for over ten years and has led STEM initiatives across the district. She also serves as the head coach for Saline High School’s girls basketball team, demonstrating her commitment to both education and athletics.
McVey shared how he first learned about the presidential award at a National Science Teachers Association conference in Houston. He had previously collaborated with Roehm on a project called The 17-Acre Classroom, which involved over 150 seventh graders in an interdisciplinary study at the Saline River Preserve. This project created educational signs funded by a grant, showcasing the impact of creative teaching methods.
Roehm is among five educators in Michigan recognized with this award, joining peers from Kalamazoo, Detroit, Novi, and Flushing. Winners receive a trip to Washington, D.C., a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and a certificate signed by the President.
This recognition not only highlights Roehm’s talents but also shines a light on the importance of exceptional teaching in shaping future generations. Her story is a reminder of the vital role educators play in inspiring students and engaging communities.
