Salmonella Alert: Tomatoes Recalled in 14 States – What You Need to Know

Recently, two brands of tomatoes were recalled in 14 states over potential salmonella contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Ray & Mascari Inc. has pulled its four-count Vine Ripe tomatoes from shelves at Gordon Food Service Stores across states like New York, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. This action came after they were alerted by Hanshaw & Caping Farms from Florida, which reported issues at their facility.

The FDA has emphasized the seriousness of salmonella infections, which can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. People with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and young children, are at higher risk of severe illness, and in rare cases, salmonella can be fatal. Thankfully, no illnesses have been linked to these tomatoes so far. Consumers are advised to discard any affected products or return them if unopened.

The tomatoes were packaged in plastic clamshells, labeled as “VINE RIPE TOMATOES” with the note “Packed by Ray & Mascari Inc.”

Other states affected by this recall include Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

In addition to this recall, Williams Farms Repack LLC has also initiated a recall for tomatoes distributed to wholesalers in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, affecting tomatoes sold between April 23-28, 2025.
