A recent salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers from a Florida grower, Bedner Growers, has affected 45 people across 18 states, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Target and Walmart are among the retailers recalling products that may contain the contaminated cucumbers.
Consumers are advised to dispose of these products, which include items like a Greek-style chicken salad from Boar’s Head and various sushi rolls sold under the Mai brand. The cucumbers were distributed from April 29 to May 19.
The affected individuals have been reported in states including Alabama, California, Florida, and New York. Of those who fell ill, 16 were hospitalized, but thankfully, no deaths have been reported. The strain identified is primarily salmonella Montevideo, although several other strains have emerged from samples collected at a Pennsylvania distribution center. Investigators are working with the CDC to determine if these strains are linked to other outbreaks.
The cucumbers may be labeled as "supers," "selects," or "plains." The FDA discovered the contaminated cucumbers during an inspection of Bedner Growers, which was a follow-up to a previous salmonella outbreak linked to the same producer.
Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illnesses worldwide. It thrives in animals and can contaminate produce when proper hygiene practices are not followed. The CDC warns that vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly, are at a higher risk for severe symptoms, which include stomach cramps and diarrhea.
Health experts emphasize the importance of washing fruits and vegetables to prevent contamination. For additional guidance on food safety, the FDA has provided resources on cleaning produce effectively.
As this situation unfolds, ongoing investigations will help ensure the safety of our food supply. Keeping informed and following updates from the FDA and CDC is crucial. For more details about the ongoing investigation, you can visit the FDA’s Salmonella Cucumbers page.
