Samford University’s Creekside Project Takes a New Turn

Homewood, Ala. — Samford University is adjusting its Creekside development project, aiming to ease community concerns and protect local wildlife.

In a recent meeting, officials revealed plans to abandon the proposed track and soccer complex near Shades Creek. This area is home to a vulnerable salamander population, which environmentalists and residents fear would be harmed by construction.

Instead of giving up on athletic facilities, the university has a new idea. They plan to collaborate with the Homewood Soccer Park, located nearby on the west side. This shared space will benefit the Homewood Soccer Club, Homewood High School, and Samford University, fostering community spirit and cooperation.

Henry Hughes, the executive director of Friends of Shades Creek, applauded the university’s willingness to listen to local voices. “It’s impressive how they’re taking community feedback seriously,” Hughes said. “If they stay committed, they could earn significant recognition for their efforts.”

This shift shows Samford’s determination to merge growth with environmental responsibility. The project will also use tax funds to support the relocation and ensure ongoing protection for the ecosystem.

While the Homewood City Council must approve the new plan, the developers hope their approach signals a positive change. The timeline for the council’s decision and the start of construction, however, is still uncertain.

Recent surveys indicate that 70% of locals support environmentally friendly projects, highlighting the community’s desire for solutions that respect nature. As more developments arise, listening to residents might become a vital part of planning.
