One fan with a special connection to that game is Sammy Sosa, a legendary slugger and the Cubs’ all-time home run leader. He vividly recalls the excitement, especially when Cleveland’s Rajai Davis hit a tying home run late in the game.
In Game 7, the Cubs jumped ahead with a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning and held on to a three-run cushion until the bottom of the eighth. But everything changed when Aroldis Chapman gave up a two-out homer to Davis, tying the game. After a brief rain delay, the Cubs regained their focus and clinched the victory in the 10th inning.
On the day of the Cubs Convention, Sosa reunited with the team, marking a significant moment after being away for nearly two decades. He had his own close call with a championship back in 2003, when the Cubs made it to the NLCS. They lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to the eventual-champion Marlins. Even though that team fell short, Sosa expressed joy seeing the Cubs finally reach the top in 2016. “It was incredible,” he said. “It could’ve been us in 2003. But they did it, and I was very happy about it.”
