The latest American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) report on telecommunications reveals some interesting insights into customer experiences with cell phones and smartwatches, particularly focusing on big players like Apple and Samsung.
iPhones vs. Samsung Phones
Apple has long been proud of its customer satisfaction ratings. In fact, during Apple’s Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook highlighted that customer satisfaction for the iPhone 17 reached an impressive 99% in the U.S., according to 451 Research. However, the latest ACSI findings tell a different story.
This year’s ACSI survey, conducted from April 2025 to March 2026 with nearly 27,000 responses, shows Samsung edging out Apple in the cell phone category. Samsung maintained its score at 81%, while Apple dropped one point to 80%. The overall customer satisfaction rate for cell phones increased to 79%, marking a 1% rise compared to last year.
Interestingly, this year marked the first time ACSI measured the performance of AI features in smartphones, scoring a high 85. This suggests that consumers are starting to see AI as more than just a gimmick; it’s becoming an essential part of the user experience.
Smartwatches: A Tie
In the smartwatch category, Apple and Samsung were neck-and-neck, both ending up with a score of 80. Here, Apple held steady, while Samsung saw a decline from its previous score of 83. Overall satisfaction in the smartwatch sector remained unchanged at 77%. The highest ratings were for features such as connectivity with apps and usability of fitness tracking, each scoring 83.
What This Means
Analysts believe that the drop in Apple’s satisfaction rating could indicate changing consumer expectations. As brands improve their technology continuously, customers may also elevate their standards, becoming less tolerant of minor issues. According to a report from Deloitte, 76% of consumers are willing to change brands for a better service experience.
Social media reactions have varied; some users express strong loyalty to Apple, while others are more vocal about their preferences for Samsung, especially regarding features and pricing.
