San Diego University Students Share Their Reactions to the News of Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

Charlie Kirk was known for traveling to college campuses across the U.S. to share and debate his conservative views on topics like immigration and gender identity. His recent assassination at Utah Valley University shocked many, including Joe Geroche, a graduate student from San Diego State University. Geroche, who didn’t agree with Kirk’s views, admitted he appreciated the discussions Kirk sparked.

Kirk founded Turning Point USA at just 18 years old. His presence was felt even at schools like San Diego State and UC San Diego, where both have chapters of his organization. Recently, his YouTube channel shared a video of his appearance at UC San Diego, showcasing his active engagement with students.

Payton Kleidon, president of SDSU’s Turning Point USA chapter, expressed how Kirk brought “vitality and hope” to conservative students. He extended his sympathies to those impacted at Utah Valley University, highlighting the unity felt among students during such a tragic event.

This incident marks yet another example of political violence in the U.S. The motive remains unclear as reactions poured in. Gabriel Soberon Nelson, another SDSU graduate student, described it as “upsetting and disturbing.” He noted that campuses should be a space for dialogue, not violence.

Leaders from SDSU, including President Adela de la Torre and Associated Students President Kareen Holstrom, emphasized the importance of civil discourse. They acknowledged that many students had voiced concerns about safety and belonging in today’s political climate.

Colleges should foster respect and understanding, not fear. They encouraged students and staff to utilize support services available on campus, including counseling. “We must not become desensitized to violence stemming from differing views,” they urged.

In recent years, data from the Pew Research Center shows a rise in political polarization among the youth. In 2022, over 60% of young people reported feeling uneasy discussing politics in social settings. This highlights the urgent need for open conversations, especially in educational environments.
