San Francisco 49ers Acquire DT Osa Odighizuwa from Cowboys in Strategic 2026 Third-Round Pick Trade

Thomas, 30, started his journey with Saleh as his defensive coordinator in 2017 in San Francisco. After a brief separation in 2021, they reunited with the Jets in 2022. This partnership lasted until Saleh was let go as the head coach in 2024.

On the other hand, Odighizuwa is making headlines in Dallas. At just 27, he’s played 84 games and started 76 of them, racking up 216 tackles and 17 sacks. His performance puts him firmly in the prime of his career.

This shift for Dallas and Odighizuwa comes as a surprise. Just last March, he signed a four-year, $80 million extension, choosing less money to stay instead of joining the Commanders. But since then, the Cowboys have undergone a significant change.

Just six months after that extension, Dallas traded away Micah Parsons. They received DT Kenny Clark in that deal and later acquired another defensive tackle, Quinnen Williams, at the trade deadline. Both Clark and Williams are expected to get extensions soon, making the defensive tackle position quite crowded, especially after the addition of Otito Ogbonnia.

Meanwhile, Dallas’ surplus of talent is a boon for the 49ers. Last season, they struggled with sacks, finishing last in the league with only 20. The addition of Odighizuwa, standing 6’2″ and weighing 280 pounds, brings much-needed power to their interior pass rush. His track record includes 81 QB hits over five seasons, highlighting his potential impact.

With Nick Bosa and 2025 first-rounder Mykel Williams set to return from injuries, new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris suddenly has a host of playmakers at his disposal.

Additionally, the 49ers hold four fourth-round picks in the 2026 draft, which gives them flexibility to move up if they decide to target more talent. This strategic positioning could play a crucial role in enhancing their roster.

In a recent survey, fans expressed excitement over these moves, acknowledging Dallas’s bold strategies and hoping the 49ers can turn their luck around. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on how these changes shape each team’s future.
