Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently expressed his ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. This message came during a special tree planting event held in Ikeja to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Represented by Dr. Tajudeen Gaji, the Permanent Secretary for Environmental Services, Sanwo-Olu highlighted tree planting as a vital, straightforward way to tackle climate change. He noted that with Lagos’s rapidly growing population and urban areas, caring for the environment is crucial.

The governor emphasized that this tree planting goes beyond a simple event; it’s about reaffirming a shared commitment to protecting Lagos’s environment. “Every tree planted will help cool our city, improve our air, and reduce flooding risks,” he said. “It’s a gift to our future generations.”

Sanwo-Olu applauded the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) fellows for their leadership and dedication. He compared the trees to the seeds of leadership they nurture—strong and enduring, symbolizing a sustainable Lagos. He noted that true progress is measured not just by economic growth but by lasting impact on the environment.

Reflecting on Lateef Jakande’s vision, Sanwo-Olu stated that the event embodies his values of foresight and service. “It’s meaningful that these young leaders chose this activity to honor my life while contributing to our state’s future,” he added.

According to a 2021 survey by the Environmental Protection Agency, areas with more trees experience better air quality and lower temperatures—a fact that reinforces the governor’s message.
