Sao Paulo triumphed over Portuguesa with a thrilling 2-1 victory at the historic Pacaembu stadium on Wednesday, marking the fifth round of the Paulista state tournament.
Right from the beginning, the game faced an unexpected delay due to a power outage in one of the lighting towers, which paused the match for seven minutes.
Coach Luis Zubeldia decided to rotate his squad, giving some starters a much-needed rest after their previous win at Majestos. This change allowed Portuguesa to seize an early advantage. Renan Peixoto scored in the 13th minute, catching the Tricolor defense off guard.
Sao Paulo responded quickly. André Silva converted a penalty in the 25th minute, leveling the score and bringing his team back into the game. After this equalizer, Sao Paulo regained their rhythm and began to control the match.
As the second half unfolded, the pace slowed. The best chance came when Ferreirinha struck the post, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. But it was in stoppage time when the real excitement happened. Ryan Francisco received a fantastic pass near the edge of the box, advanced, and scored a well-placed shot, completing Sao Paulo’s comeback.
With this victory, Sao Paulo remains undefeated and sits atop Group C with 10 points. In contrast, Portuguesa is struggling at the bottom of Group B, holding just two points.
Looking ahead, Sao Paulo will face Santos in a classic matchup at Vila Belmiro on Saturday, while Portuguesa will take on Botafogo-SP at Pacaembu the same day.
