Sara Advocates for Tougher Accountability Measures: Officials to Face Punishments and Lifestyle Audits

Vice President Sara Duterte Calls for Accountability in Flood Control Projects

Vice President Sara Duterte is advocating for strict actions against public officials involved in ghost and low-quality flood control projects. She urges for lifestyle checks to ensure transparency among officials.

During a recent interview in The Hague, she noted that the Commission on Audit can investigate these projects based on findings from their audits or those from the Department of Public Works and Highways.

Duterte, who visited her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, at Scheveningen Prison, emphasized that the scrutiny shouldn’t just stop with flood control but should extend to school building projects. She expressed concern that budget allocations for schools haven’t received enough attention.

She stated, “I mentioned last year that the House of Representatives divided the budget for the school building program. So far, there has been little response to this issue.”

Duterte highlighted that public funds should be monitored closely, suggesting that more people need to investigate how money is being used in the education sector. This call for accountability is echoed by many citizens concerned about the state of public services.

Furthermore, she supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s stance on lifestyle checks for all public officials. She stressed the need for in-depth reviews beyond what’s documented in the Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN). “It’s essential to uncover any potential misconduct,” she said.

Broader Context

Concerns about government accountability extend beyond the Philippines. According to a 2022 Transparency International report, countries with strong auditing practices have lower rates of corruption. This suggests that rigorous oversight could be a way to improve public trust in government.

Citizens are becoming more vocal on social media about these issues, sharing their frustrations and calling for change. Engaging discussions on platforms like Twitter highlight the importance of transparency in governance, showing that the public is increasingly aware and involved in these matters.

In this pivotal moment, the push for accountability reflects a growing demand for better governance in the face of historical issues surrounding mismanaged public funds.
