Sarah Jessica Parker Reveals the Agonizing Challenge of Judging the Booker Prize

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker recently shared her experience as a judge for the Booker Prize, calling it both a privilege and a challenge. She, along with four other judges, sifted through a longlist of 13 novels to create a shortlist of six contenders for this prestigious literary award.

Among the finalists is Kiran Desai, who won the Booker Prize nearly two decades ago for her novel “The Inheritance of Loss.” The current shortlist also features notable writers like Andrew Miller and David Szalay, as well as three U.S. authors: Susan Choi, Katie Kitamura, and Ben Markovits. • Ben Markovits – “The Rest of Our Lives”: In this novel, a man embarks on a road trip after sending his daughter to university. It’s a blend of a family saga and a personal journey, exploring themes of loss and new beginnings.

• Andrew Miller – “The Land in Winter”: Set during a fierce winter storm in 1962, this novel tells the story of two pregnant women and the unraveling lives of two couples. The judges described it as a gripping tale of love and tension amidst extreme circumstances.

• David Szalay – “Flesh”: Following a young boy’s journey from a Hungarian estate to working for the wealthy in London, this novel addresses class ascension in a unique way. The judges called it a fast-paced read that reflects deep human experiences.

Despite these six making the cut, seven books were regretfully left behind, and Parker expressed the emotional difficulty of selecting which works would not advance. She highlighted the rigorous process the judging panel employed to evaluate the 153 novels they reviewed over eight months, using a “traffic light” system to categorize their favorites.

Parker described the thrill of being part of this literary event, noting the excitement of holding unreleased works from well-known authors.
