Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Reboot Won’t Happen at Hulu

The highly anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially off the table at Hulu.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the iconic star of the original series, shared the news on Instagram. She expressed her disappointment, revealing that Hulu will not be moving forward with the reboot titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, which had been in the works since February 2025.

In her heartfelt video, Gellar said, “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward.” She thanked director Chloé Zhao for helping her reconnect with her love for the character.

Gellar reassured fans, “This doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.” Despite the cancellation, sources suggest Hulu may be exploring other options for the future.

The reboot was set to feature a new Slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, while Gellar’s Buffy was to reprise her role and serve as an executive producer. The project had a promising team, including Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao and writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman from Poker Face.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer first graced our screens in 1997, running for seven seasons and even spawning a spinoff, Angel, from 1999 to 2004. The original series has a lasting impact and a dedicated fan base, showcasing themes of empowerment and friendship. Today, it remains a cultural touchstone, with fans expressing their love on social media and reflecting on its significance.

Notably, reboots like this one face increasing scrutiny. A recent survey showed that while many viewers are excited about remakes, they’re also skeptical about whether they can capture the original’s magic. As Gellar said, the world of Buffy is special to many, and any revival must honor that legacy.

As the entertainment industry navigates changing audience expectations and responses, it will be interesting to see if and how Hulu might revive this beloved franchise in the years to come.
