Drexel Dining recently teamed up with Too Good to Go, an app that connects users with local businesses selling surplus food at discounted prices. This partnership supports the fight against food waste and offers students in University City more affordable meal options.

Founded in Copenhagen in 2016, Too Good to Go has gained immense popularity. Now boasting over 100 million users worldwide, the app’s model benefits everyone involved: customers get quality food for less, businesses make money from food that would otherwise go to waste, and the environment reaps the rewards.

As of this month, several popular Drexel spots like Chick-fil-A and Starbucks are available on the app. Hot meals and snacks can be reserved at significantly reduced prices, often 25 to 50% off. Users receive a “Surprise Bag” of unsold items, which they can pick up at a designated time. This bag’s contents vary, making each experience unique.

A growing number of University City eateries have also joined in. Local favorites like Savas Brick Oven Pizza and Mad Greek’s Pizza offer daily bags, while cafes like Madis Coffee Roasters and Top Hat Coffee Lounge have made their mark as well. Breakfast items from places like Schmear It and Bart’s Bagels are particularly popular.

Many students find Too Good to Go to be a lifeline amid tight budgets. The app is easy to use, and portions are generous. Madhu Karuppiah, a third-year Biomedical Engineering major, highlighted her positive experiences, saying, “I always feel like I’m getting more than I paid for.”

However, there’s an element of unpredictability. When ordering, users receive whatever is left over for the day. Some may have a hard time consistently finding suitable options due to dietary restrictions—though participating businesses provide brief descriptions of what to expect, specifics can be tricky.

Madhu noted that some people mistakenly think the app only offers bad food. “The truth is, it’s perfectly fine,” she remarked, adding how she enjoyed trying new bubble tea flavors at T.UNI Tea Cafe for just seven dollars. Milind Sangani, a Biological Sciences major, noted the value but pointed out that portion sizes can be large; “I got around ten bagels once,” he said. “It was worth it, but that’s a lot for one person!”

Both students appreciate the convenience of a local app that makes food more affordable. Karuppiah pointed out, “It’s great for those who can’t eat out every day but still want to treat themselves.”

With living costs on the rise, balancing finances and school is tougher than ever for students. Too Good to Go represents a practical solution, helping stretch budgets while also promoting sustainability. Drexel’s partnership is a meaningful step in reducing waste while making good food accessible for everyone in the community.
