After 17 years in Owensboro, Jerome Hernandez and his wife, Diovy, are excited to bring a taste of the Philippines to the community with their new food trailer, Mangkok Filipino Cuisine.
Jerome, who works as a heavy equipment operator, and Diovy, a skilled cook, have always wanted to share the food from their homeland. Their adventure began at the Owensboro Multicultural Festival, where they amazed everyone by selling out over 300 servings in just a few hours.
“That experience inspired us to take this leap,” Jerome shared. “People loved our food and kept asking if we had a restaurant. Now, we are making that dream a reality!”
Mangkok Filipino Cuisine will offer a range of traditional dishes. They will serve lumpia, which are Filipino-style egg rolls filled with pork, onions, and celery. Pancit, a flavorful noodle dish, and pork adobo, a favorite marinated dish, will also be featured. They have a sweet twist on spaghetti that many will love, plus a unique style of chicken wings that balances sweetness and spice.
“Filipino cuisine blends influences from Spain and China,” Jerome explained. “It’s savory, not overly spicy, and rice is always on the plate.”
The couple has successfully passed all health inspections and received their operating license. They aim to launch in early March, weather permitting. While they will join local events, they are also looking for a permanent spot where customers can enjoy their food regularly.
“We want to share the dishes we cherish and introduce something fresh to Owensboro,” Jerome said. “My wife is the real chef behind the recipes, and we can’t wait for everyone to have a taste.”
