Savor Comfort Food with a Stylish Twist at Otterbach’s Historic Oldest House: Discover Schlemmerwerk!

Living in Kaiserslautern for almost two years, I’ve struggled to embrace German food. My go-to at local festivals is flammlachs, a Finnish specialty. But I’m trying to change that.

Recently, I joined friends from the Ladies of the KMC Facebook group at Schlemmerwerk im Kipperhof, a restaurant in Otterbach. It’s in the town’s oldest restored building, which has been serving delicious meals since 1991.

The menu features a mix of traditional and modern German dishes, including juicy burgers and hearty steak cooked on hot stones. The vibe is cozy, making it a great spot to gather with friends.

On my first visit, I ordered a small Argentine filet, medium-cooked, with grilled shrimp in garlic confit. The flavors were incredible! The steak was just right for a chilly evening, and I could have happily devoured more of the shrimp. The servers were friendly, offering help when my phone struggled with translation apps.

When I returned for a second visit, I found myself watching mouthwatering burgers come out of the kitchen. But I wanted to stick with my goal of trying German dishes. Unfortunately, my first two choices were unavailable. The waiter then recommended seasonal lemon pasta with salmon. I decided to give it a shot.

The pasta was covered with a creamy citrus sauce, and the salmon was perfectly cooked. It was a large dish, enough that I took half home. The tapas I ordered were a delightful surprise, offering chicken in teriyaki sauce and crispy fried shrimp with a sweet mango dip. Not exactly traditional German fare, but they left me wanting more.

My dining companion chose the Kipperhof specialties: pork cutlet with a rich mushroom cream sauce and homemade spätzle. He raved about how flavorful the mushrooms were, saying they must’ve picked quality ones instead of the cheapest option.

We ended our meal with dessert, which is often a rotating selection. I loved the panna cotta topped with sweet strawberry sauce. Although the cherry crumble was tasty, it didn’t quite satisfy my sweet tooth. The raspberry cheesecake had a tangy punch, making it my second favorite.

Each table has a button for summoning waitstaff, a thoughtful addition that improves service, especially when the place gets busy. The combination of great food, friendly staff, and attentive service will definitely bring me back to Schlemmerwerk.

For those interested, the restaurant is located at Hauptstrasse 12, Otterbach. Opening hours are Sunday from noon to 10 p.m., Monday to Friday for lunch, and dinner on select days. Prices for main dishes range from 15 to 45 euros.

In a recent survey by the German Restaurant Association, nearly 70% of diners expressed a desire for more traditional meals in casual settings, like Schlemmerwerk. This trend reflects a growing appreciation for local cuisine, making it a great time to explore traditional dishes.
