IKEA is bringing a fresh experience to Milan Design Week from April 21 to 26, 2026, with an exhibition called “Food For Thought” at Spazio Maiocchi in the lively Porta Venezia district. After four successful years in Tortona, this new exhibition focuses on how different cultures celebrate food rituals—cooking, eating, and sharing moments together.
“Food For Thought” combines IKEA’s principles of Democratic Design—looking at form, function, sustainability, and affordability—with the sensory appeal of food. Set in a modern take on a Swedish saluhall, or traditional indoor food market, the exhibit features collaborations with architect Midori Hasuike, spatial designer Emerzon, and acclaimed chefs. Together, they transform IKEA products through immersive room setups and a large working kitchen that showcase the role of food in our daily lives and special gatherings.
Visitors can engage with interactive installations and watch live cooking demonstrations. These elements encourage reflection on how good design can enhance our wellbeing, ignite curiosity, and nurture a sense of belonging. In a time when home has increasingly become a sanctuary, IKEA aims to inspire more playful and meaningful living within our spaces.
This exhibition will also offer a sneak peek at a new flagship collection through various playful installations.
In an era where shared meals often take center stage, studies reveal that family dinners can strengthen relationships and improve communication, making this theme especially relevant. According to a recent survey by the American Psychological Association, families that gather for meals at least three times a week report improved emotional health and connection.
“Food For Thought” will be open at Spazio Maiocchi (Via Achille Maiocchi 7) during Milan Design Week, highlighting how IKEA continues to bridge food and design.
