Berks County is becoming a surprising hotspot for halal food. Over the past year, at least four new halal restaurants have popped up: Sajal Hot Chicken & Gyro in Kutztown, NYC Deli in Reading, Zaytoon in Wyomissing, and the latest, Sizzling Bites in Muhlenberg Township.
Sizzling Bites first launched in Bethlehem in 2024 and has now opened its third location in Berks County. It’s rapidly gaining popularity, with another branch set to open in Scranton by 2026. The new spot is located at Plaza 222 on the 5th Street Highway, in a space that previously housed Alebrije.
During my visit, the lunch rush was lively. I saw people ordering, waiting for their meals, and enjoying their food. I opted for a lamb platter and added some baklava to my order. The total came to about $25, but the dinner-sized portions made it worth it.
Sizzling Bites’ lamb platter features diced lamb on a bed of yellow rice topped with a delicious white sauce. This is slightly different from Zaytoon, which uses shaved lamb. While the meat was incredibly tender, the real standout was the unique sides—Sizzling Bites offers French fries instead of Zaytoon’s pita.
The baklava, topped with crushed pistachios and sweetened with honey, was the perfect finish to my meal. Many diners rave about the food on social media, highlighting both the flavors and generous portions.
This growth in halal dining reflects a broader trend. According to a recent report from the Pew Research Center, the Muslim population in the U.S. is expected to grow to 8.1 million by 2050, increasing demand for halal options. Berks County’s halal scene is clearly evolving to meet these needs.
Sizzling Bites is part of the cultural mosaic that makes Berks dining exciting. It’s not just about food; it’s about community and diversity. As more halal options become available, it’s clear that Berks County welcomes this change.
