Savor the Flavors: Discover Casa Cortes Mexican Restaurant in This Week’s Berks County Eats Friday Food Feature on BCTV!

In June 2025, Casa Cortes Mexican Restaurant opened its second location at Stabon Plaza in Mohnton. This lively restaurant aims to bring fresh flavors and a welcoming atmosphere to the community.

The space has seen many changes over the years. It was once Maniaci’s Bistro, which became known after an episode of Restaurant: Impossible. Since then, it has hosted several eateries. Casa Cortes, with its first location on 9th Street in Reading, hopes to thrive in this evolving space.

Upon entering Casa Cortes, you’re welcomed by a bustling takeout counter. The colorful dining room is filled with bright yellow, green, and orange decor, creating a cheerful vibe. During our visit shortly after 5 p.m., we were the only diners, although the restaurant showed signs of life with a recent table turnover.

Our server brought out a basket of fresh chips paired with a thick, mild salsa—a delightful start. We ordered horchata, which had a creamy texture and just the right amount of cinnamon. It’s not overly sweet, making it easy to enjoy with the meal.

The menu, although not extensive, offers a variety of appetizing options, including breakfast dishes available all day. I opted for the “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink” burrito, packed with steak, bacon, egg, avocado, tater tots, and cheese. It was hearty and satisfying but could have used a bit more sauce to enhance the flavors.

Julie tried the birria quesadillas, filled with rich braised beef and served with a flavorful consomme for dipping. She found them truly delicious, appreciating the balance of flavors. Meanwhile, Jakob enjoyed a chicken tinga burrito filled with pulled chicken and served with extra chips, which felt a bit redundant after the initial basket but added to the overall meal.

For our youngest, Lukas, chicken fingers and fries were a hit, providing a safe choice for picky eaters. Despite filling up on chips, we had plenty to take home.

Our total was about $65 for four entrees and two drinks, which is reasonable given the quality and quantity of food. The service was the only downside; our server checked in infrequently, causing delays in drink delivery.

Overall, the food was great, and I’d return to experience more of what Casa Cortes has to offer, including their original location in Reading. With a growing interest in Mexican cuisine, Casa Cortes might just become a staple in Mohnton.
