Savor the Flavors: Must-Try Delicacies at the UP State Fair Luncheon!

On August 14, Escanaba hosted the “Taste of Membership Luncheon” at the U.P. State Fair. This event, organized by the Delta County Chamber of Commerce, brought together more than 350 attendees. They enjoyed a feast featuring local culinary delights from various member businesses.

Guests savored brisket from Brisket Barn, hearty sandwiches from D&M Subs, and mini pasties from Dobber’s Pasties. There were also delicious rolls with whipped cinnamon butter from Texas Roadhouse and meat and cheese platters from Sav-Mor IGA. Additionally, salads from Papa Murphy’s and street corn on the cob from Freshwater Tavern added vibrant flavors to the menu. Dessert included beautifully decorated cakes from Elmer’s County Market and cookies from Chip Off The Old Block.

The event coincided with Honored Citizens’ Day, honoring the local community. The highlight was the presentation of the 2025 U.P. Veteran of the Year Award to Raymond E. Carlson. He was recognized for his two-decade leadership with Michigan’s American Legion, amid congratulations from Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and other dignitaries.

After the award ceremony, State Senator Ed McBroom introduced Lt. Gov. Gilchrist, who spoke passionately about affordable housing and career opportunities in the U.P. He emphasized the need for businesses to thrive in Michigan, saying, “Our job is to ensure you have a pathway to success.” Gilchrist stressed community collaboration for a prosperous future, reaffirming, “Together, we can create a Michigan where everyone has a chance to grow.”

His insights echo wider trends in Michigan’s economy, where recent statistics show a 3% increase in job creation over the past year. The state is focusing on attracting more businesses by improving infrastructure and job training programs. This helps local economies like the U.P., where many are looking for stable careers.

Following his speech, Gilchrist engaged with attendees, answering questions moderated by Senator McBroom and Bay College President Dr. Nerita Hughes. U.P. State Fair Management Agent Vickie Micheau expressed gratitude to the local businesses and supporters that made the event possible, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the community.

The luncheon was supported by several sponsors, including DTE, Michigan Works, and the Upper Peninsula Power Company. Their commitment reflects the ongoing effort to promote interaction and unity among local organizations and government officials.
