As autumn approaches, the buzz in Sunnyside grows for the annual Taste of Sunnyside event. This beloved restaurant and bar crawl is back for its 15th year, taking place on Sunday, October 12, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants will gather under the elevated 7 train at 46th St-Bliss St before exploring a variety of local eateries along Queens Boulevard.
While the specific restaurants involved for 2025 haven’t been revealed yet, Dirk McCall de Palomá, executive director of the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District, anticipates a turnout similar to last year’s record-breaking event. Last year, 65 local businesses took part, welcoming over 1,200 food lovers to sample incredible local cuisine.
Many participants cherished the sunny fall day as they navigated through the diverse food scene. From Latin American and Asian delights to cozy bakeries and lively Irish bars, there was something for everyone. This event not only promotes the culinary richness of Sunnyside but also fosters a sense of community by encouraging attendees to stroll through the neighborhood.
The crawl format, established in 2021 due to COVID-19 safety concerns, has become a favorite among both guests and business owners. It allows attendees to interact directly with restaurant owners and try popular dishes right from the source. McCall de Palomá explained, “You’re meeting the people behind the food, and you’re trying one of the best things on the menu.”
Local restaurant owners have voiced their support for the crawl. Michelle Murphy, co-owner of Bar 43, shared how meeting locals at her restaurant has opened the doors for new customers. “Even greeting people brings them in,” she expressed.
Valerio Marchi, owner of multiple venues, including Sotto Le Stelle, has enjoyed the new format. He appreciates that guests can experience the ambiance of his restaurant and benefit from fresher food preparations. “People come to my restaurant and know how it looks,” he noted.
Attendees have also enjoyed returning each year. Justin and Amanda Chapin, who no longer live in the neighborhood, come back yearly to taste what Sunnyside has to offer. “Every year, it gets bigger and better,” Justin remarked, emphasizing how the variety of food just keeps improving.
According to a 2022 survey by the National Restaurant Association, local food festivals like this one are vital for the economy, with attendees often spending over $50 each during such events. This economic boost helps support local businesses and strengthen community ties.
As excitement builds for this year’s Taste of Sunnyside, early bird tickets will be available soon through Sunnyside Shines, promising another fantastic day of food, fun, and community spirit.
