Los Angeles is a paradise for sushi lovers, with everything from grocery stores to trendy restaurants. This month, a highly anticipated addition is making its way to the West Coast.

Sushi Nakazawa, led by chef Daisuke Nakazawa, famous for his role in “Jiro Dreams of Sushi,” will open on May 13 on Robertson Boulevard, right between West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. This isn’t Nakazawa’s first venture in LA. They had a month-long pop-up at the Peninsula Beverly Hills in 2022 and recently launched Hi Dozo, a delivery-only service, in 2024.

The new permanent Sushi Nakazawa location has been years in the making. Initially announced in 2022, the restaurant will now welcome guests to a space designed like an underwater cavern, complete with a robata grill. This means you can expect a mix of hot and cold dishes alongside their traditional sushi offerings.

At $190 for the omakase nigiri and $295 for a chef’s tasting with hot dishes, the prices are relatively reasonable for LA. Many other omakase spots charge more, with some starting at $450, making Nakazawa’s options stand out. As per recent surveys, fine dining prices have surged in LA, yet Sushi Nakazawa aims to offer a high-quality experience without breaking the bank.

Sushi Nakazawa enters a competitive omakase scene in Los Angeles, but co-owner Alessandro Borgognone is confident. He believes in the essence of what Nakazawa has mastered over his 30 years in sushi. “We are here to bring my partner’s unique take on sushi to LA,” Borgognone shared.

Furthermore, the restaurant plans to boast the most extensive sake list in California. They also aim to expand with lunch service and outdoor seating in the near future. A brick-and-mortar location for Hi Dozo is also on the horizon.

This new chapter for Sushi Nakazawa not only highlights the evolution of sushi culture in the U.S., but it also taps into a growing trend of consumers seeking quality dining experiences that balance value with gourmet offerings. As sushi continues to capture the hearts of many, Nakazawa’s presence in LA promises to enrich the local culinary landscape.
