Say Goodbye to Colonoscopy Anxiety: Bart the Old Fart Teams Up with Hackensack Meridian Health for a Friendly Guide

Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) just launched a new campaign that takes a lighthearted approach to a serious topic: colorectal cancer screening. Called “Bart the Old Fart,” the campaign introduces Bart, a humorous elder who encourages younger people to get screened so they can also “live to be an old fart” like him.

The goal is clear: HMH wants to normalize colonoscopies as essential for health, while guiding patients to their doctors for these screenings.

There are five key ads in this campaign. In “Nap,” Bart relaxes in his chair, reminding viewers that a colonoscopy is easy and not scary. He even calls it “a lifesaving nap.” “Penny” tackles the issue of cost, reassuring viewers that screenings can be affordable. “Safe” highlights the importance of early detection, while “Good Ol’ Days” addresses myths about the prep process. Finally, “Fishing” shows Bart sharing his wisdom on the value of screening for a long life.

This campaign stands out because it uses humor and relatability instead of sorrowful statistics. By featuring Bart as a friendly elder, HMH aims to break down stigmas and promote colonoscopies as a part of self-care.

Opeyemi Oluwole, HMH’s Chief Marketing Officer, shared, “This campaign makes it easier to talk about a topic many want to avoid. By using Bart’s character, we can address concerns and encourage more people to get screened. Early detection saves lives.”

David DeMuth, CEO of Doner, added, “Healthcare marketing thrives on being informative while inspiring action. Bart’s character achieves this balance beautifully, blending education with charm.”

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. However, screenings can significantly lower the risk of developing it. Data shows that people who get screened are 68% less likely to die from it than those who don’t.

Social media is already buzzing with reactions to the campaign. Many users appreciate the fresh and funny approach, expressing their feelings about how lighthearted messaging makes health conversations feel less intimidating.

This campaign isn’t just about laughs. It’s a vital reminder of the importance of early detection for a healthier future.
