Ann L. Scherer, a dedicated volunteer, has been named the grand marshal for the upcoming Fourth of July Parade in St. Joseph. Riding in a classic Ford Mustang convertible driven by her husband, Chuck, she will wave to the crowd of onlookers.
The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. on Minnesota Street. Ann is honored by the recognition and sees it as a tribute to the generous spirit of St. Joseph’s community.
“I thought it was an honor,” Ann shared when informed of her selection. “It reflects well on all the generous people and businesses here.” Her husband Chuck echoed this sentiment, proudly stating she truly deserves the accolade.
Ken and Mary Stommes were key in notifying Ann about her honor. Members of the Parade Committee and local Lions members quickly agreed that she was the perfect choice. In a recent call with the Newsleaders, the couple reminisced about the many positive stories they’ve heard about Ann over the years.
For 25 years, Ann worked tirelessly with the St. Joseph Community Food Shelf. Her efforts helped feed families facing food insecurity due to financial struggles. “The best part was meeting people,” she said. “Many were working hard but still couldn’t make ends meet. Receiving thank-you letters from them was incredibly touching.”
She spent 22 years actively working with the food shelf—collecting donations, buying food, and managing distribution. Since retiring, Ann has continued to serve on the board of directors for three years. Her family has pitched in during busy seasons, making it a true community effort.
Ann is proud that the food shelf has relied entirely on local support, without government funding. This year, it even secured a matching grant of $30,000 from the Norman Skalicky Foundation, a significant boost made possible by the community’s generosity.
A Little About Ann
Born in Prescott, Wisconsin, Ann Schommer moved to St. Joseph in third grade. She later married Chuck, and together they raised three children. Over the years, Ann has worked various jobs, including at St. Cloud Fingerhut and helping at the family’s trucking business.
Ann views her grand marshal role as a reflection of the entire St. Joseph community—its residents, volunteers, businesses, and churches. “Without their support, the food shelf wouldn’t exist,” she said.
This year’s parade will not only highlight Ann’s contributions but also celebrate the community spirit that makes St. Joseph thrive. Local acts of kindness and charity continue to be vital in addressing food insecurity and supporting those in need.
