Senator Chuck Schumer isn’t backing down despite criticism from his party. After he supported a Republican spending bill without major negotiations, calls for him to step down have intensified. On NBC’s “Meet The Press,” he declared, “I’m not stepping down.” He described the GOP’s recent six-month bill as “bad,” but argued that a government shutdown would be far worse.
Some Democrats believe Schumer missed a chance to negotiate a bipartisan deal. They think he could have used the budget standoff to regain some influence in a Republican-controlled Congress. Schumer defended his choice by warning about the risks of a shutdown.
He pointed out that during a shutdown, vital programs could be at risk. For example, he mentioned that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) could be deemed “non-essential” and lose funding, leaving many families at risk.
Concerns about Schumer’s leadership are growing, with some members of his party suggesting a primary challenge in the 2028 election. Notably, Senator Bernie Sanders faced questions about whether he supports Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez running against Schumer. Although Sanders criticized Schumer’s recent decisions, he noted, “He’s the leader of the party.”
Schumer attempted to show a united front among Democrats, emphasizing that even with differences in voting, the party remains committed to opposing Trump. He commented, “We’ve all agreed to respect each other… We are united in fighting Donald Trump every step of the way.”
Recent surveys show that many voters are increasingly concerned about government shutdowns and their impact on essential services. According to a poll by the Pew Research Center, over 60% of Americans now view government shutdowns as harmful.
