Scientists are observing changes in the Beaufort Gyre, an Arctic ocean current. These shifts could lead to an increase in freshwater flowing into the North Atlantic, potentially disrupting the AMOC. Céline Heuzé, a climatology lecturer at the University of Gothenburg, expressed concern. She noted that if the Arctic sea ice continues to melt, we could reach a tipping point where the AMOC may collapse.

According to a report published in the journal JGR Oceans, the Beaufort Gyre is predicted to shrink in a warmer climate. The study indicates that both high and moderate emissions scenarios could prevent the gyre from gathering freshwater, ultimately affecting the Arctic and North Atlantic’s oceanic properties.

Why is this important? If a significant amount of freshwater pours into the North Atlantic, it could weaken the AMOC. Climate expert Raffaele Ferrari from MIT warns that a collapse would lead to drastic changes, like rising sea levels along the U.S. East Coast and altered weather patterns across the globe.

Despite the alarming predictions, a recent study suggests that the AMOC hasn’t declined in the past sixty years. This brings some hope that it might be more resilient than previously believed. However, continuing high emissions will likely slow it down further, raising questions about when a collapse might occur.
