Score Big for Your Heart: Join Us at the Kick 4 Ur Heart Tournament!

Last weekend, the Ballaz Liberty Park Academy hosted the fifth annual Kick 4 Ur Heart Tournament, a vibrant event merging athletic competition with a vital message about heart health. Young footballers played hard while advocating for awareness of cardiac health.

The tournament was founded by Andre Virtue, the director of Ballaz Academy, after he experienced two heartbreaking losses: his father, Patrick, passed away from a heart attack in 2011, and student-athlete Dominic James tragically died on the field during a match in 2016.

Reflecting on these losses, Virtue shared, “Those experiences really hit home. I wouldn’t want another athlete to die during a game. We love this sport, but we must also acknowledge the health risks we often overlook.” His passion has driven a mission that goes beyond football.

The Kick 4 Ur Heart Tournament raises funds for cardiac screenings and supports coaches with related medical expenses. It educates athletes about how to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. “Every kick we make is for a reason — it’s about saving lives,” Virtue said. “No athlete should face dangers from sudden cardiac arrest when early screenings can help.”

This year, Gatorade partnered with the tournament, providing hydration support to all participants. Stephan Bennett, Gatorade Jamaica’s brand coordinator, emphasized their dedication to nurturing young athletes. “We’re proud to support initiatives like Kick 4 Ur Heart. This is where champions emerge — at the community level.”

Through this partnership, participants enjoyed free hydration stations and additional support, enhancing their overall experience. “Aligning with Gatorade is a significant step forward for us. We wanted a partner who shares our vision for youth development,” Virtue noted.

While the tournament fostered a spirit of healthy competition, it also advanced crucial heart health awareness throughout the community. The blend of athletic and educational objectives aims to empower young athletes, making sure they have not only the skills to succeed but the knowledge to stay safe.

As heart health issues continue to rise globally—affecting about 697,000 people a year in the U.S. alone—events like these become increasingly essential. They inform athletes about the importance of regular screenings, healthy lifestyles, and what to do in emergencies.

In an era where sports can inspire meaningful change, the Kick 4 Ur Heart Tournament stands as a beacon for combining passion and purpose, showing that every game played can make a difference in someone’s life.
