Katrina Scott, a freshman on the University of Tennessee women’s tennis team, has achieved All-America status. This honor, announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), marks the third consecutive year the Lady Vols have had a singles All-American, something that has only happened twice in the program’s history.
Scott joins former players Elza Tomase and Sofia Cabezas in this achievement, echoing a streak set between 2001 and 2003 by notable players like Alison Ojeda. Head Coach Alison Ojeda expressed deep pride in Scott’s rapid impact on the program, asserting, “She will forever have a special place here at Tennessee.”
This recognition is significant as Scott is the 21st Lady Vol to earn All-America honors and the 12th to do so in singles. The criteria for this accolade include winning the ITA All-American Championship or excelling at the NCAA Individual Championships.
In her debut season, Scott posted an impressive singles record of 9-4, dominating the court against tough ranked opponents. Remarkably, seven of her nine victories were against ranked players, all in straight sets. One standout moment was her victory over then-No. 1 ranked Carmen Herea during Tennessee’s upset against Texas, marking a significant win for the program.
Scott’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed; she was named SEC Player of the Week after winning against Ole Miss’s No. 18 player, Emily Welker, and solidifying another upset against LSU by defeating the highly-rated Cadence Brace.
Currently, Scott is ranked No. 11 in the ITA’s singles rankings and continues to impress by maintaining a strong record against other All-Americans. Her journey exemplifies not only her talent but also reflects the growing strength of the Tennessee women’s tennis program.
In recent years, the emphasis on collegiate tennis has increased, with more emphasis on player development.
