Scream 7: A Return to the Familiar
In 2026, the iconic horror series returns with Scream 7, directed by Kevin Williamson. Neve Campbell reprises her famous role as Sidney Prescott, joined by other familiar faces like Courteney Cox and Isabel May. After missing the last film over contract disputes, Campbell’s return was highly anticipated. However, this latest installment feels less thrilling and more predictable.
The film kicks off with a couple, played by Michelle Randolph and Jimmy Tatro, renting a house where prior murders occurred. Their experience quickly escalates when a real Ghostface emerges, setting a suspenseful tone. Yet, while the opening sequence is enjoyable, the film’s initial energy fades into a series of meandering moments.
As Sidney sees her daughter Tatum, portrayed by Isabel May, in danger from Ghostface, the tension builds. A particularly suspenseful scene features Tatum and Sidney hiding from the killer, adding some excitement. But soon, we see hints of a convoluted storyline that sometimes distracts from the primary plot.
Critics have noted that some performances, like Mark Consuelos’ as a flashy reporter, seem out of place, while Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers reinvigorates familiar dynamics. In many scenes, actors like Anna Camp and Mckenna Grace blend into the background with lackluster performances.
In a film centered around horror, the killings could have packed a stronger punch. The movie oscillates between thrills and predictable tropes seen in previous Scream films. While it has its entertaining moments, it could feel flat for die-hard fans of the franchise, especially compared to the clever twists of recent entries.
Despite its shortcomings, Isabel May stands out with her portrayal of the rebellious daughter, whose bond with Sidney adds depth to the film. However, many viewers may leave wishing for more innovation and excitement than what this installment offers.
