The Screen Actors Guild Awards, popularly known as the SAG Awards, is set for a fresh identity. From now on, it will be called the Actor Awards, presented by Sag-Aftra. This change reflects the show’s dedication to honoring actors.
Jon Brockett, the executive producer, shared that the name change helps viewers across 190 countries immediately understand what the show is about. “Now, people can easily connect with ‘the Actor Awards’ and know they’re tuning in to see their favorite stars,” noted JoBeth Williams, the awards committee chair.
This renaming comes just before the 32nd ceremony on March 1, 2026. The new title not only highlights the focus on actors but also aligns with the award’s trophy name, a move that recognizes the 2012 merger between the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
Interestingly, having a recognizable title boosts the award’s visibility during the Oscars season. Each year, the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and Golden Globes climb the popularity charts, often known for their trophies rather than the organizations behind them.
In recent times, the industry faced significant challenges, especially during the Hollywood strikes of 2023, which were managed by outgoing leader Fran Drescher. Sean Astin, star of “The Lord of the Rings,” has recently taken the reins of Sag-Aftra, promising a new direction for the organization as it continues to represent around 160,000 members.
As the industry evolves, it’s crucial to see how these changes will affect actors and the awards landscape. The Actor Awards might just be a new chapter that brings the spotlight back to the craft of acting.
