SCSU Volleyball Claims Victory Over Assumption and Felician with Exciting 3-1 Triumph

WORCESTER, Mass. – Southern Connecticut volleyball clinched two impressive victories on Saturday, defeating Felician University and Assumption University, both with a score of 3-1. This pushed the Owls’ record to 7-3, while the Golden Falcons fell to 3-8 and Assumption dropped to 3-10.

Kerrigan Habing stood out with a career-high of 20 kills and 10 digs against Assumption. Kimi Mitchell also shone, racking up 68 assists throughout the day, including a personal best of 42 against the Greyhounds.

In their first match against Felician, Sydney Bennett led with 10 kills and 3 blocks. Habing and Sarah Stark contributed with 9 and 8 kills respectively. Notably, Sarah Henault had 4 service aces and 17 digs, while Kimi Mitchell added 26 assists.

The match began tightly. Felician initially took a lead, but Southern rallied back to win the first set 25-23, thanks to crucial kills by Bennett and Stark. The second set saw Felician sprint ahead, but Southern quickly pulled them back with a 25-20 win, fueled by Henault’s serving prowess.

Southern dominated the third set, taking a commanding 17-9 lead and ultimately winning 25-16. The fourth set proved challenging as both teams fought fiercely, even tying at 19-19. However, the Owls found a way to clinch the set 25-22, securing the match.

In their second match of the day against Assumption, Habing once again shined, with another double-double of 20 kills and 10 digs. Alongside her, Katie Bardak and Bennett also contributed with 9 and 7 kills, respectively. Mitchell’s 42 assists were instrumental as well, while Henault led the defense with 21 digs.

Assumption initially led the first set 23-17, but Southern fought back to tie it at 23-23. Unfortunately, Assumption closed it out 25-23. The second set saw the Greyhounds take a swift lead before Southern rallied back, finishing the set with a 25-22 win.

The third set was all Southern, as they surged to an impressive 22-11 lead, ultimately winning 25-15. In the final set, Southern maintained momentum, battling through Assumption’s efforts to stay close and finishing strong with a 25-18 score.

These wins not only showcased the team’s skill but also highlighted their resilience and teamwork. As volleyball gains popularity in collegiate sports, teams are leveraging analytics to improve performance. A recent study from the NCAA reported that teams adopting data-driven strategies have a competitive edge in matches. This strategic approach has become an essential aspect of modern volleyball.
