On a night of ups and downs for the Grand Canyon University (GCU) volleyball team, they faced San Diego State in an intense match. Despite outscoring their opponents, GCU fell short, losing in a tightly contested fifth set.
The match ended with the Aztecs winning 14-25, 25-20, 10-25, 25-16, and 17-15. This defeat was significant as it allowed San Diego State to break a tie for fourth place in the Mountain West Conference. Currently, GCU holds a record of 15-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play. With five regular-season games left, their next home match against UNLV is crucial.
Head coach Kendra Potts reflected on the game’s unexpected twists. “Volleyball can be unpredictable,” she mentioned, acknowledging that even when GCU dominated stats like hitting percentage (.223 to .156), the small moments often decide the game.
Graduate outside hitter Sophia Parlanti underscored the importance of those moments. “Just one more dig or hit could have changed everything,” she explained. Parlanti had an impressive performance with 14 kills but felt they were just an inch away from victory.
The Lopes started strong, leveraging a powerful 6-0 run that put them ahead early. Yet, they struggled in the second set, allowing San Diego State to take the lead late in the game, partly due to several errors from GCU. The Aztecs seized this opportunity, finishing the second set 25-20.
In the following set, GCU bounced back dramatically, with both Parlanti and setter Bella Nunez leading a 7-0 scoring run to secure a dominant 25-10 win, taking a temporary 2-1 match lead.
However, San Diego State answered back, taking control in the fourth set and forcing a final showdown. In the decisive fifth set, GCU and San Diego State exchanged leads until a tight 15-15 tie, where defensive errors ultimately cost GCU the match.
Statistically, GCU had some standout performances: Nunez notched 12 kills alongside 14 assists, while junior libero Bella Anderson made an impressive 19 digs. Despite the loss, Potts remains optimistic about learning from these challenges, emphasizing that “a loss isn’t a loss if you grow from it.”
The match highlights the unpredictable nature of sports, where every point counts. Given recent surveys, fans have been increasingly drawn to close matches like this one, showcasing the excitement and drama of collegiate volleyball.
