On the eve of Netflix’s big docuseries about Sean “Diddy” Combs, the star’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter. This letter demands that Netflix hold off on releasing “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.” They accuse the streaming service of using “stolen footage” in what they describe as a “shameful hit piece.”
The footage in question appears in the trailer for the docuseries, which dropped recently. In the clip, Combs states, “We need to find someone who will work with us who has worked in the dirtiest of dirty businesses. We are losing.” His spokesperson, Juda Engelmayer, explained that Combs has been documenting his life for years, and the footage shown was meant for a personal project.
Engelmayer also noted that Combs hasn’t seen the Netflix series in advance. Despite this, he claims that both Netflix and show producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson are aware of Combs’ extensive filming history and how unfair it is to use that footage without permission.
In response, a Netflix spokesperson reaffirmed the legal acquisition of the footage. The docuseries director, Alexandra Stapleton, emphasized that they took great care to maintain the confidentiality of the filmmaker who provided the footage. She mentioned multiple attempts to interview Combs’ team without a response.
Combs’ legal team has indicated a willingness to pursue further action if Netflix proceeds with the release. This is not the first time Combs has faced challenges with media outlets. He previously filed a $100 million defamation suit against NBCUniversal regarding another documentary.
On social media, Jackson continues to mock Combs, which adds a public layer to their ongoing feud. Meanwhile, Combs, currently serving a 50-month sentence after being convicted on two counts, is appealing his conviction. He is also facing several civil lawsuits related to allegations of misconduct, which he denies.
