Rapper Sean Kingston, born Kisean Anderson, has been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison. He and his mother, Janice Turner, were convicted of wire fraud after defrauding businesses of over $1 million earlier this year.
Turner, 63, received a five-year sentence last month for her role in the scheme, which involved using Kingston’s fame to trick luxury brands into sending goods without upfront payment. They would then use fake wire transfers to cover the costs. Kingston’s lawyer argued that a serious jet ski accident in 2011 left him emotionally stunted and without role models. However, the prosecution disagreed, labeling him as a “thief through and through.”
In court, Kingston expressed regret, saying he has learned from his mistakes. Yet, he was immediately taken into custody after his sentencing, with pleas for him to be allowed to attend medical appointments denied. A restitution hearing is scheduled for October 16.
