Sounders FC Retains Paul Rothrock: A Key Player for the Future
Sounders FC recently announced the re-signing of midfielder Paul Rothrock, extending his contract through the 2028-2029 season, with a club option for 2029-2030. Rothrock, a Seattle native, has shown impressive skill since joining the team in August 2023, netting 16 goals and providing 12 assists in 92 appearances.
Last season, Rothrock had his best run yet, playing in 47 matches and scoring five goals along with nine assists. He contributed significantly during the playoffs, assisting in a key moment during a home win against Minnesota.
General Manager Craig Waibel praised Rothrock’s reliability and professionalism. “He’s stepped up in important moments,” he said, indicating how valuable Rothrock is to the team dynamic.
Head Coach Brian Schmetzer echoed these sentiments, highlighting Rothrock’s work ethic. “He embodies the Pacific Northwest grit that defines what it means to be a Sounder,” Schmetzer noted, underscoring the cultural fit Rothrock has within the team.
The midfielder’s journey to this point has been noteworthy. From beginning his career at Sounders FC Academy in 2016, Rothrock moved on to play at Notre Dame and Georgetown, helping the Hoyas capture their first NCAA Championship in 2019. He was selected in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft and showed his talent with Toronto FC II before returning home to Seattle.
Rothrock expressed his commitment to the team: “This city, this club, and the people around it mean everything to me.” His dedication reflects a trend among athletes who emphasize community ties, particularly in cities like Seattle, where sports are interwoven into local culture.
Statistically, Sounders FC had a great season in 2025, finishing fifth in the Western Conference with 55 points. They also competed in a record 50 matches, winning their ninth major trophy in the Leagues Cup. Such achievements showcase the team’s growing legacy in Major League Soccer.
As the Sounders prepare for the 2026 season, beginning on February 22 against the Colorado Rapids, fans can look forward to continuing to see Rothrock shine on the field, embodying both talent and local pride.
