Seawolves Dominate Hawaii Pacific with a Strong Performance
On November 14, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves showcased their talent, claiming a decisive 72-49 victory over Hawaii Pacific at The Shark Tank. Sophomore forward Mahaila Harrison led the charge with an impressive 24 points. Junior center Lillee Duffin also shone, contributing her first double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
In this first NCAA Division II West Region matchup of the season, freshman guard Mylee Anderson added substantial support with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists. The Seawolves, now 3-0, overcame an early setback, quickly bouncing back after trailing 7-2. They mounted a 12-0 run and maintained their lead throughout the game.
Coach Matt Thune praised the team’s response to an early timeout. “Our defense kept them from finding their rhythm,” he noted. The Seawolves held Hawaii Pacific to .313 shooting while forcing 17 turnovers, a testament to their defensive strategy.
The first quarter ended with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from sophomore guard Kimberly Carrada Sanchez, giving the Seawolves a 17-12 lead. Harrison extended the advantage with four free throws midway through the second, pushing the score to 27-14.
At halftime, Alaska Anchorage led 36-21. They maintained a 20-point advantage with a score of 51-31 by the end of the third quarter. Although Hawaii Pacific attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 14 points twice in the fourth quarter, Harrison responded each time. She executed a three-point play and followed it with a long-range shot, cementing the Seawolves’ lead at 61-44 with just over four minutes remaining.
Historically, teams that establish early leads often secure victories, and this game was no different. Harrison’s three consecutive games scoring over 20 points is a promising start to her Seawolves career. Duffin also turned in an efficient performance, shooting 5 of 9 from the field.
Senior guard Elaina Mack added eight points and tied for fifth place on UAA’s career three-pointers list with 177, matching Juneau’s Tanya Nizich.
The Seawolves are set to face Chaminade next on November 15 at 5 p.m. AST in the GNAC/PacWest Challenge at McCabe Gymnasium, where they’ll aim to keep their momentum going.
