DULUTH, Minn. – Second Harvest Northland made an exciting announcement this week. After merging last year, they are making a bigger difference in the fight against hunger in the region.

The Grand Rapids and Duluth food organizations joined forces on January 1, 2024, forming Second Harvest Northland. Since then, their impact has been significant.

Shaye Moris, the president and CEO, shared that they have improved food distribution by 4%. This increase means 370,000 more meals are reaching those in need.

Second Harvest Northland serves 15 counties in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Unfortunately, food insecurity is a big issue here, especially for children. One in six kids in the area and over 63,990 adults struggle to know where their next meal will come from.

The merger has helped them expand services while cutting costs. “We actually decreased our budget by about 11%. This allows us to invest more in programs that support our communities,” Moris said.

Currently, Second Harvest Northland is the second largest food bank in Minnesota, following the one in the Twin Cities.
