A suspect is dead after crashing a truck into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan. It happened Thursday afternoon, and thankfully, no injuries were reported among students or staff present at the time.
According to Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the situation began when the man drove the truck through the doors and down a hallway. He then exited the vehicle armed with a rifle. Synagogue security confronted the suspect, and shots were fired. Bouchard did not clarify how the suspect died.
While no one else was injured, one security guard was knocked unconscious and taken to a hospital. That guard is expected to recover.
Bouchard noted that something inside the suspect’s vehicle caught fire. Investigators are checking for explosives to ensure safety, but there was only one person inside the truck.
The FBI and local law enforcement agencies, including the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, responded quickly to the scene. The synagogue is the largest Reform congregation in the U.S.
Parents of students were directed to meet at the nearby Jewish Community Center. Local schools went into a heightened security mode, and law enforcement advised people to stay clear of the area to allow for emergency operations.
In a statement, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the right of the Jewish community to worship freely. “Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan,” she said.
Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, condemned the attack, stating, “There is no justification for violence toward any house of worship.”
This attack comes amid rising tensions and antisemitism across the country. According to a recent report from the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents have increased by 34% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Communities are responding with more security measures.
