Seeds of Hope: Nourishing South Mississippi

SEMINARY, Miss. – The growing season is buzzing for Seeds of Hope, a non-profit in Covington County. They are committed to providing fresh vegetables, including corn and potatoes, to food pantries in South Mississippi.

This year, Seeds of Hope is cultivating about five acres of corn. Once harvested, the fresh produce will be delivered to local food banks like the Edwards Street Fellowship Center. It’s the organization’s sixth year of planting and sharing food with those in need.

Ann McCullen, the executive director at Edwards Street, shares the joy: “This food is fresh, healthy, and we can give it out right away. When summer comes, people naturally think of corn on the cob, and it’s truly a gift.”

Last year, Seeds of Hope managed to donate an impressive 5,000 pounds of corn to the center. Cole Rogers, board chairman of the organization, adds, “We aim to support everyone who needs help. Whether we harvest 10,000 ears or 100,000, we are grateful for every bit that can help others.”

Rogers plans to gather a team to harvest at the end of June. Volunteers are always welcome to lend a hand. If you’re interested, you can call 601-517-8404 for details.

The work of Seeds of Hope is a perfect example of community spirit. In 2021, food insecurity affected nearly 10.5% of households in Mississippi, highlighting the importance of initiatives like this.
