Selena Gomez Speaks Out on Emilia Pérez and Her Surprising Decision to Step Away from Music

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Selena Gomez recently shared her thoughts on the mixed emotions surrounding Emilia Pérez.

During the Virtuosos Awards at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the moderator acknowledged the scrutiny that the film has faced. He noted its critical acclaim and the 13 Oscar nominations but also touched on the controversy stemming from the film’s lead actress, Karla Sofía Gascón.

Gascón, the first openly transgender actress nominated for an Oscar, has come under fire for her past social media posts, which contained offensive statements regarding various communities. One of her tweets, which has since been deleted, described Islam in a negative light.

Though Gascón was scheduled to receive the Virtuosos Award with Gomez, she was absent from the event.

Selena Gomez continues to support important causes, including advocacy for undocumented immigrants and Palestine. She expressed her gratitude for her experience with Emilia Pérez, stating, “I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets. I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

In light of the situation, Gascón has apologized for her remarks and removed her profile from social media.

Gomez also hinted at a significant change in her career. She mentioned that her experience in film might make it challenging for her to return to music. “Film and art making, being around such incredible, talented people… I don’t know. It’s going to be very hard for me to ever go back to music after this,” she shared.
