Sen. John Cornyn Calls on FBI to Assist in Locating Texas Democrats Who Fled the State: What It Means for Texas Politics

FBI Director Kash Patel has stepped in to help in the search for Texas Democratic lawmakers who left the state to protest recent congressional maps. Senator John Cornyn announced this on Thursday. Texas Republicans are eager to bring the Democrats back so they can form a quorum and vote on new maps, redrawn in a way that could enhance their party’s influence.

For a quorum in Texas, at least 100 out of 150 representatives must be present. Currently, some lawmakers are risking daily fines of $500 for not returning. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called for civil arrest of these lawmakers and instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety to facilitate their return, though they lack jurisdiction outside the state.

Abbott and Cornyn have also raised concerns about potential bribery linked to the funding of this quorum break, pointing to donations from various groups, including Beto O’Rourke’s political action committee. Abbott recently convened a special session, including redistricting efforts aimed at gaining more congressional seats.

Historically, Texas Democrats have used this tactic before to block legislation. In a statement, Texas Rep. Gene Wu criticized the current redistricting effort, calling it a “racist gerrymandered map.”

Abbott has indicated intentions to seek a judicial ruling to penalize the lawmakers further, including a case against Wu, whom he refers to as the “ringleader” of the protest. Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating O’Rourke’s PAC for their involvement.

This situation is noteworthy in light of recent studies showing how political gerrymandering, a practice often used to ensure one party retains power, has been on the rise across the United States. According to a report by the Brennan Center for Justice, over 40 states have engaged in some form of redistricting that alters electoral maps to favor one party.

Political tensions remain high as both parties gear up for upcoming elections, making this dispute even more critical.
