The Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is urging the adoption of effective and lasting policies to tackle climate change in West Africa. This call to action came from Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong during a meeting with the C7 West Africa Project Consortium in Abuja on February 21, 2025.
Senator Ekpenyong highlighted the serious threat climate change poses to the Niger Delta and its communities. He emphasized the need for a deep understanding of how climate change affects this region to develop proactive policies that address these challenges effectively.
The senator pointed out that years of oil exploration have severely damaged the environment, leading to rising sea levels, flooding, and unpredictable weather. These changes have displaced communities and jeopardized their livelihoods. Moreover, climate-related issues are contributing to the spread of diseases, putting additional pressure on an already strained public health system.
He also noted the link between environmental damage and social unrest, stating that to achieve lasting peace, it is crucial to tackle these underlying problems. However, he stressed that any actions taken must be based on reliable data. Without accurate information, efforts may be misguided or insufficient.
Air Commodore (Rtd) Darlington Abdullahi, who led the delegation, echoed these concerns. He described climate change as a global threat that is impacting security and stability. He pointed out that West Africa is facing climate change more intensely than many other regions, resulting in conflicts and humanitarian crises.
He mentioned that Nigeria is feeling the effects of climate change strongly, impacting resources, biodiversity, and agriculture. Abdullahi called for increased research, mitigation, and adaptation efforts that have been underway over the past three years to build resilience in the face of these challenges.
This dialogue underscores the urgent need for informed decision-making and cooperative action to combat the escalating climate crisis in the Niger Delta and beyond.
